  • The subsidized version is a need-based loan. With this loan, interest is paid by the government while you are in school and during the six months following graduation.
  • With an unsubsidized version of the Stafford Loan, interest is paid by the borrower, but it may be deferred until graduation, or paid while you are still attending school.
  • The Stafford Loan is a simple interest loan (unlike credit cards, home equity loans and other loans which are compound interest), with the rate capped at 8.25%.
  • There may be a one-time guarantee of up to 1% paid to the guarantor (the agency that insures the loan) and one-time 3% origination fee paid to the federal government to help offset the program costs. The fees are deducted from the loan proceeds. Guarantee fees to attend two- and four-year public and private undergraduate institutions, graduate and professional school are waived.
  • Interest may be tax-deductible.
  • You may prepay on this loan without a penalty.
  • Loans can be consolidated when in repayment.

Loan Consolidation Criteria

  • If all your student loans are through one lender (that is not PrimeSource Credit Union) contact that lender to see if they are a consolidating lender. If they are, federal regulations require you to use that lender for your consolidation.

  • You cannot apply for a loan consolidation if you have already consolidated your student loans, unless you are including a new student loan in which you are repaying.
